Nearly 58.9 million passengers took off from major German airports in the first six months of this year, yielding a year-on-year increase of 4.1 per cent, according to a statement from the Federal Statistical Office on Monday.
Despite setting a record over the first half of the year, growth in the month of July was weaker, according to figures from the ADV airport association, which counted arrivals and departures but did not include passengers in transit from one airport to another.
Under these criteria, passenger growth in July increased by 1 per cent to 24.6 million - the weakest annual growth since April 2018.
The ADV said the growth slowdown was due to higher traffic figures from the previous year, when the airlines tried to fill a supply gap created by Air Berlin's bankruptcy with a surplus of flight offers.
