InfoQuest (August 05, 2019) -- Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak met with President Shinji Nakano from Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Bangkok (JCC) today (August 5). During their talk, Somkid assured JCC that the new government will continue various policies introduced by the previous Thai government such as Thailand 4.0 and Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). This guarantee that the new government would not change course has boosted the confidence of JCC. As a coalition government, the new government will set the direction for future work through the economic cabinet meetings.
President Shinji Nakano said that the sentiment of Japanese businesses in Thailand for the first six months had dropped, due to their concerns over the US-China trade war, the stronger baht value, and the slow establishment of the new Thai government.
"Because of the trade war and the slow establishment of the new Thai government, it is normal for foreign investors to have little confidence in the Thai economy. But that everyone in Thailand must unite as one and cooperate with each other is of most importance," Mr. Somkid said.
JCC President added that most Japanese entrepreneurs believe the Thai economy will rebound in the second half this year.
Moreover, the chamber also expressed concern over the new government's plan to raise the daily minimum wage, and asked Somkid to consider carefully.
Somkid replied that the issue would be carefully discussed by representatives of the government, private sector and labour sector.
When asked about the objection of the opposition faction that the prime minister is not suitable for the presidency of the economic cabinet, Mr. Somkid said that a country wanting to develop must have a clear, ambitious direction, and without the support of the prime minister, we cannot get the ball rolling on any policy. Under the new administration, the prime minister is in a position to give full support and everyone to work hard in their respective role, which is a good thing.
As for the opposition faction's plan to table a motion of no-confidence against the government for debate and vote before deliberating on the 2020 national budget, Mr. Somkid replied with an appeal to every Thai official to be supportive of each other and pool wisdom and resource together to work for the interests of Thai people, "I do believe that as long as we unite as one, our country is bound to be on track towards development."
