BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The handover ceremony of China-constructed Roberts International Airport (RIA) upgrade project was held in Liberia, another important achievement of China-Liberia cooperation.
The Roberts International Airport upgrading and reconstruction project is one of the key projects of the China-Africa cooperation program. Financed by the Export-Import Bank of China, it was designed and built by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). Construction work started in November 2016.
Roberts International Airport, 56 kilometers from the capital city of Monrovia, was built during World War II. Many airlines have cancelled or stopped flights to the airport due to its poor facilities.
After completion of the upgrading and reconstruction project, the airport's new passenger terminal has a construction area of about 20,000 square meters, 10 times that of the old terminal building. Besides, it is equipped with supporting systems such as drainage, power supply, communication, sewage treatment, and parking lots.
A modernized airport will further promote economic growth and development for all Liberians. Besides, upgrading of the airport is a milestone in Liberian social and economic development.
