BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Constructed by Chinese company China Water Resources & Electric Power Corp. (CWE), a highway in San Ignacio, north of Bolivia officially opened to traffic on July 28.
The highway connects Bolivia's political center La Paz and Trinidad, capital city of the Department of Beni in north Bolivia and is the only artery between the two places. After completion, it will shorten the time for residents of northern Bolivia to La Paz by at least three hours.
Construction work of the project broke ground in May 2014 and lasted for 5 years. In the construction process, CWE has faced extreme natural conditions and difficulties.
The highway project is the first road project undertaken by a Chinese-funded enterprise in Bolivia, and it has a length of 72 kilometers in two sections.
The highway will greatly improve people's travel conditions and promote local economic development, Bolivian government will continue to upgrade its road network system, said Bolivian President Evo Morales in the launching ceremony.
