InfoQuest, (July 17, 2019) -- After sworn in by His Majesty The King on the evening of July 16, 2019, Thai newly installed Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana and his deputy Santi Promphat attended a worship ceremony on the first day in office.
After the worship ceremony ended, Mr. Uttama said he bore no pressure as taking office. When Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha delivers the government's policy to parliament, departments under the Ministry of Finance will proceed the policy under the supervision of the deputy finance minister. After General Prayut's statement to parliament, short- and long-term measures to shore up the economy will be decided. So far, the Ministry of Finance has had preliminary discussions on the policy but has yet to determine the details.
"Relevant policies and measures will take into account of basic economic sectors and the middle class, but it takes time to discuss appropriate measures to be launched, but not too long, as the Ministry of Finance has been preparing such measures for a while. In accordance with the order of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, all the campaign promises made by the Palang Pracharath Party and coalition parties shall be put into place. Regarding the promise to cut personal income tax by 10 percent, the issue needs to be discussed in details", said Mr. Uttama.
Mr. Santi was once the transport minister during the period when the government was led by Samak Sundaravej. Mr. Santi said the job duties for the deputy finance minister and the transport minister were very different but he did not feel stressed out. The top priority of the Ministry of Transport is how to dispose funds, while the key task for the Ministry of Finance is to seek money.
