ADDIS ABABA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- China's readiness to cooperate with the global community on major universal development targets will have an inclusive impact on the betterment of the global population, an Ethiopian expert said Wednesday.
Costantinos Bt. Costantinos, who served as an economic advisor to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), told Xinhua on Wednesday that China, as a major player in the implementation of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), would have "enormous contribution" towards the realization of the underlining targets of the Agenda 2030.
"SDGs have aroused global action in areas of crucial significance for humankind and the mother earth," Costantinos said, adding "the target is to end poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions, and to ensure that all human beings can fulfill their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment."
"In this sense, China has already fulfilled much of this target lifting seven hundred million people out of poverty and providing safety nets for the remaining citizens it is working to bring out of poverty," Costantinos said.
According to the expert, years into the implementation of the SDGs, "unacceptably high numbers of young people are still experiencing poor education and employment outcomes," which he said is a phenomenon that requires greater collaboration among the global community.
"While the international community will play an essential role in providing overall leadership by bringing stakeholders together, channeling international financial support, and providing technical assistance, real solutions to the economic and social challenges facing youth will begin and end at home," he argued.
Urging governments to support initiatives and activities at the grassroots and national levels that contribute to the realization of the 2030 Agenda, Costantinos also noted that China is ready and committed to partner with countries across the globe towards the realization of the targets.
"On global prosperity, the fact that China is ready to share its technological expertise, particularly in 5G, with other countries will ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature," Costantinos said.
Costantinos, also a professor of public policy at the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, further stressed that "China has committed itself for this global change through the Belt and Road Initiative."
"China's assurance to partner with the global community has to be taken seriously," he said.
The scholar further stressed that the BRI could be seen as a wellspring of joint construction and sharing to build an effective global interconnection and partnership for human development and security.
