BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The Tarim oilfield in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has provided 231.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas to eastern China as of the end of May, benefiting 400 million people and over 3,000 enterprises in more than 120 cities, according to PetroChina Tarim Oilfield Company.
The use of the 231.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which is equivalent to 300 million tonnes of standard coal, has cut emissions of harmful substances by more than 200 million tonnes, the company estimated.
The Tarim oilfield, with an annual gas supply capacity of 25 billion cubic meters, has been a key provider for a 4,000-km national pipeline project that transmits natural gas from the west of China to the east. It offered 9.821 cubic meters of natural gas to eastern China in January to May, an increase of nearly one billion cubic meters over the same period of last year.
As China's third-largest onshore oil and gas producer, the Tarim oilfield contributes to one sixth of the country's total domestic natural gas output. (Edited by Su Dan)
