China helps Bahamas revitalize capital city

May 15, 2019

Abstract : A top coastal living and entertainment complex, a new landmark project undertaken by a Chinese firm in Nassau, capital city of the Bahamas, is helping inject new vitality into the city.

BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- A top coastal living and entertainment complex, a new landmark project undertaken by a Chinese firm in Nassau, capital city of the Bahamas, is close to completion, injecting new vitality into the city.

The project, called a catalyst for the development of downtown Nassau by local media, plays a crucial role in the revitalization of the capital city.

From development, land acquisition to design, construction, sales and future operation, all the work related to the project has been or will be finished by CCA South America, the main platform of China Construction America (CCA) affiliated to China State Construction Engineering Corp. Ltd. (CSCEC), one of the world's largest investment and construction groups.

Currently, the completed first-phase of the project includes office space, a parking building with around 800 parking spaces which has greatly eased the parking problem in  the downtown area, and released the commercial development potential of surrounding plots, and an entertainment center which can receive about 500 customers a time.

The second-phase of the project which is under construction includes brand resorts and sea view apartments. The apartments will serve an important means to attract locals back.

The commercial effects of the project are already shown. All the surrounding stores have been rented out, and the Bahamian government also announced the expansion plan for the cruise terminal to connect the project area, said an executive with CCA South America, adding that the project provides more options for onshore activities.

The project will attract massive international tourists and local residents, greatly enriching their life, remarked Hubert Alexander Minnis, Prime Minister of the Bahamas, noting that the project is an important step for renewal and upgrading of downtown Nassau.

CCA South America has already built a large land resort in Nassau which received a total investment of 4.2 billion U.S. dollars and opened business in 2018. It is one of the largest resort development projects in the western hemisphere as well as the largest single housing project undertaken by a Chinese company overseas.

The project, covering an area of 4.53 million square meters, is home to four towers and three high-end hotels which boast 2,200 guest rooms, according to a source familiar with the project.

The full-swing opening of the resort is a key reason for the rapid growth of tourists to the Bahamas, believed Dionisio D'Aguilar, Minister of Tourism and Aviation of the Bahamas.

The resort, which owns more than 5,000 local employees, has also expanded job and business opportunities for local communities, said an executive with the resort. (Edited by Gu Shanshan)
