BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China's first local authority funded high-speed railway project started construction in eastern province of Jiangsu Thursday.
The intercity railway construction project for cities along the Yangtze River is led by the provincial government. The project will help promote the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, support the integration of the Yangtze River Delta, improve the comprehensive traffic network in cities along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu.
The 278.33-km-long intercity railway is designed with a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, and the construction period is 4 years.
The railway line starts from Nanjing South Railway Station with the end point standing at Taicang Station. In the future, the railway will connect Shanghai Pudong, becoming another east-west traffic corridor. (Edited by Bao Nuomin, baonuomin@xinhua.org)
