BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- China's major mobile phone manufacturers are stepping up the pace to seize the foldable smartphone market.
Chinese tech giant Huawei has announced a plan to launch Mate X 5G foldable smartphones this June, and TCL Corporation expects to reveal its foldable devices in the first quarter of 2020.
Incomplete statistics shows that mobile phone makers such as ZTE, OPPO, Xiaomi, and Samsung also unveil their latest foldable smartphones or relevant technology.
The global shipment of foldable smartphones is projected to reach three million units in 2019, and total 70 million units in 2022, accounting for four to five percent of the mobile phone market, industry insiders predicted.
Innovative products like foldable phones are expected to drive a new round of development of the whole industry, against the backdrop of the sluggish market demand for smartphones, Shuo Tianluan, engineer with the Informatization and Industrialization Integration Research Institute of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) told the Xinhua-run Economic Information Daily.
China's smartphone shipment from January to February was about 46.14 million units, down 14.2 percent year on year, according to latest data from CAICT. (Edited by Su Dan)
