Volkswagen is to join forces with Amazon in creating a cloud services partnership to boost productivity at its assembly plants, the German carmaker announced from its Wolfsburg headquarters on Wednesday.
The aim is to set up a "Volkswagen Industrial Cloud" linking 122 VW plants around the world, with the aim of speeding up assembly processes, VW said.
The two companies have agreed to work on developing the cloud over several years, with the long-term aim of incorporating VW's global supply chain with more than 30,000 locations and more than 1,500 suppliers.
The company has announced plans to boost productivity at its assembly plants, with the exception of those in China, by 30 per cent by 2025.
Speaking at a company meeting in Wolfsburg last week, VW chief executive Herbert Diess said: "We have to earn considerably more money with our cars in order to be able to invest in the future."
Diess called for the company to be slimmed down, making it able to react more quickly to the competition.
VW is also working with Google separately to network its cars on the road.
