BEIJING -- Top United Nations (UN) officials expressed their optimistic views on China’s Belt and Road initiative as a key step toward sustainable global development, in the recently exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency.
The Belt and Road initiative links to a major global effort to decarbonize the economy and it will be a key element of inclusive development, said David Nabarro, Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
Nabarro said that one can't advance in sustainable development without well-designed infrastructure policy.
Meanwhile, Xu Haoliang, UN Assistant Secretary-General, highlighted the win-win approach of the initiative, and said that leaders of China have stated that they see this as a win-win strategy, not only for China, but also for counties along the Belt and Road corridors.
It is an important point. What China has proposed to do through the Belt and Road initiative, like investment, trade, industrialization projects, are what other developing nations also need to adopt in their countries, said Xu.
Percy Wachata Misika, Representative of China, DPR Korea and Mongolia, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, regarded the initiative as a commitment of China toward selfless development.
Misika said that China has a commitment to selfless development and try to help promote development of its neighbors. If all counties were thinking in that way, the worldwide sustainable development goals would have been much easier to achieve for the very poor, the least developed regions.
The UN is now carrying out the 2030 Agenda, a people-centered, universal, transformative and integrated plan which recognizes that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with fostering economic growth and addressing a range of social needs, while tackling climate change.
