BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) – Basic conditions for China to speed up developing hydrogen production based on nuclear energy and hydrogen energy metallurgy are ready, according to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
CNNC has carried out the early stage cooperation with leading domestic institutions and enterprises such as Tsinghua University and China Baowu Steel Group Corporation Limited for combining nuclear hydrogen production with hydrogen metallurgy, said CNNC chairman Yu Jianfeng during a press conference in Beijing.
Combining nuclear hydrogen production with hydrogen metallurgy would be epoch-making technological revolution, said Yu, noting that a 600,000 kw high-temperature gas-cooled reactor unit can meet the energy demand of 1.8 million tonnes of steel for hydrogen, electricity and part of oxygen. It can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 3 million tonnes per year, and reduce energy consumption by about 1 million tonnes of standard coal, which will effectively alleviate China's carbon emission pressure, helping solve environmental problems caused by energy consumption.
It is learned from the conference that China has built and operated a 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled experiment reactor. A 200MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor commercial demonstration power station is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2020.
China has taken lead in the field of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology. CNNC and Tsinghua University have initiated a 600MW high temperature gas cooled reactor commercial nuclear power plant project, basically completed its standard design and review, and started site selection work.
