BEIJING, March 13 (Xinhua) - The joint venture of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd and China COSCO Shipping Co., Ltd., in Dalian, has recently completed construction of the second dockyard, which has been operational since March 1, according to Chineseshipping.com.cn Tuesday.
The new dockyard, with a length of 550 meters and width of 68 meters, is equipped with four cranes and is capable of making large merchant vessels.
As early as in 2007 when the Dalian joint venture (JV) was established, the plan for building the second dockyard has been in shape but the construction was suspended due to the week market demand in 2008.
Later in 2017, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., one of the major LNG vessel producers in Japan, decided to approve construction of the second dockyard with a planned investment of around 1.198 billion yuan or over 20 billion Japanese yen as global demand for large merchant ships recovered.
The JV between Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and China COSCO Shipping Co., Ltd. in Dalian is their second large modern shipping making business following the first one in Nantong.
Currently, the Dalian JV mainly makes capsize vessels, very large crude carriers (VLCC), very large ore carriers (VLOC), 10000TEU container ships and 6200PCC car carriers. Its annual ship making capacity is three million DWT and steel processing capacity is 400,000 tonnes.
Upon completion of the second shipyard, production capacity of the Dalian JV improved by 50 percent. Enditem (Edited by Duan Jing, duanjing@xinhua.org)
