BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) – Chinese payment giants such as WeChat, Alipay and UnionPay are accelerating their layout of mobile payment service in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Experts pointed out that the interconnection of mobile payments will to some extent promote the initial formation of the smart living cycle in the Greater Bay Area and bring vitality to the development of all walks of life in the area.
AlipayHK recently announced that Hong Kong users could use e-wallet service to make cross-border payments by scanning QR code in the selected stores in the Greater Bay Area.
According to a report released by Tencent on the use of the WeChat application, in particular for payment services in the Greater Bay Area, daily average cross-border payments made by the Wechat users of the Chinese mainland in Hong Kong and Macau surged 3 times and 10 times year on year in January, respectively.
China authorities have recently unveiled the outline development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The plan says to develop the region into a cluster of smart cities and push forward the interconnection of electronic payment systems in the area. (Edited by Yang Yifan, yangyifan@xinhua.org)
