The sports car manufacturer Porsche plans to equip its small Macan sports utility vehicle with an electric engine.
The electric model is to be built in its Leipzig factory, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Saturday, referring to a decision taken by the Porsche board at the end of 2018. A company spokesman declined to comment on Sunday.
According to the report, production is to start at the Leipzig facility at the beginning of the next decade, with the sales launch foreseen for 2022. "We want to now drive into the future emissions-free," Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume told the magazine.
The Macan is considered a sales hit and is particularly popular in China.
The decision to build an electrically powered Macan had long been anticipated. The Leipzig factory had already announced in December 2018 that it was equipping itself for a future with electric cars. Porsche has foreseen investments amounting to hundreds of millions of euros at the Leipzig site, which has more than 4,200 employees.
The sports car manufacturer is banking on e-mobility. The Taycan is due to enter the market this year as the first purely electric Porsche model. By 2025, half of all new Porsches are meant to have a hybrid or purely electric engine.
