China-funded solar-powered milling plants constructed in Zambia -- About 1,830 solar-powered milling plants have so far been constructed in various parts of Zambia out of the earmarked 2,000, an official said on January 31. The construction of the milling parts, which is being funded at a cost of 200 million U.S. dollars from China, is intended to ease the problem of access to milling plants, especially in rural parts of the country. The building of provincial training centers is part of the package by the Chinese contractor to ensure that locals are able to man the milling facilities and as part of skills transfer.

Multinational hotel operator, Shanghai Construction Group to jointly build new hotel in California -- Interstate Hotels & Resorts, a leading U.S.-based global hotel management company, on January 30 signed a management agreement here with Shanghai Construction Group America (SCGA) for a new hotel project in California. The new hotel, located in the city of Garden Grove, 60 km southeast of downtown Los Angeles, will be developed by SCGA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) and headquartered in New York City. The construction work on the Le Meridien, designed with a modern twist, is expected to start in the third quarter of 2019 and the hotel to open at the end of 2021. Then Interstate Hotels & Resorts will manage the hotel, which features 400 luxury guest rooms, for the owner SCGA.

China's first PPP-funded high-speed railway under construction -- Construction of China's first public-private partnership (PPP) funded high-speed railway has kicked off, China Railway Construction Corporation said on February 2. The 266.9-km railway will start from the city of Hangzhou, crossing Shaoxing and ending in Taizhou, all cities in east China's Zhejiang Province. The rail line is designed to run at a top speed of 350 km per hour, according to the company. A total of 44.9 billion yuan (about 6.69 billion U.S. dollars) will be invested in the construction of the project, with private firms accounting for a 51-percent share. Connecting the cities boasting the most remarkable growth of private economy nationwide, the rail line is expected to be a significant part of China's railway network. China is redoubling its efforts to build the world's most extensive and sophisticated railway network. By 2020, China will have 150,000 km railway including 30,000 km high-speed railway, according to the government's plan.

Chinese firms awarded contract for interchanges project in Botswana -- Botswana's ministry of transport and communications on Thursday signed a contract with Chinese firms for the construction of three interchanges. Tender award for design, build and transfer was awarded to Zhong Gan Engineering and Construction (Pty) Ltd, China Jiangsu International Botswana (Pty) Ltd and Unik Construction Engineering (Pty) Ltd Joint Venture. The project, which is estimated to cost 44.72 million U.S. dollars, is part of the Botswana Integrated Transport Project (BITP) that is funded by the government of Botswana in conjunction with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) to the tune of 385.2 million U.S. dollars.

China to set up explosives firm in Zimbabwe to help mining industry -- China will soon set up an explosives manufacturing firm in Zimbabwe that will boost the southern African country's mining industry, China's charge d'affaires Zhao Baogang said on Jan. 31. China rolled out multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects in Zimbabwe in 2018 as it stepped up bilateral cooperation following the elevation of ties between the two nations from all-weather friends to comprehensive, strategic partnership of cooperation in April last year. Some of the projects include the 300-megawatt Kariba South extension project, the 1.5-billion-dollar Hwange Thermal Power Station expansion, Harare International Airport expansion and the new parliament building.

China-Laos railway to complete 90 pct bridge, tunnel construction in 2019 -- Over 90 percent of the tendered bridge and tunnel projects of the China-Laos railway will be completed by the end of 2019, the construction company has said. Specifically, the railway's roadbed and bridge projects will be 95 percent complete, while the tunnel projects will be 90 percent complete at the end of 2019, said Li, adding that the building of the base for track laying and railway stations will be started soon. The construction of the key and difficult projects and the bottleneck projects of the railway went steadily and smoothly. By the end of 2018, the accumulated investment of the railway had reached 11.8 billion yuan (around 1.7 billion U.S. dollars), accounting for 31.5 percent of the total.
