BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese cities have successively unveiled their economic development achievements in 2018 recently, showing that they are playing an increasingly important role in driving regional economic growth, noted experts.
Experts also pointed out that Chinese cities would focus their competition on aspects such as resource utilization and high-quality development in 2019.
In the past 2018, many Chinese cities have achieved fruitful economic results.
For instance, Zhengzhou in central China's Henan Province has seen its economic growth in 2018 reach around 8 percent, becoming the country's 16th city that has achieved a gross domestic product (GDP) of over one trillion yuan.
Beijing has reaped a GDP of over three trillion yuan, the second city after Shanghai to make such an achievement.
As hubs for various local resources as well as the second and third industries, cities are important windows to observe regional economic development, noted Cong Yi, professor at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (TUFE), adding that data released by different cities show that China's economic transformation and upgrading is steadily progressed.
In the economic race, many Chinese cities have turned eyes to talents, introducing policies covering employment and entrepreneurial incentives, preferential housing policies, cash allowance and other fields to attract more talents for local development.
Besides, many big cities put emphasis on high-quality development, proposing measures such as transforming traditional industries, quickening the establishment of the emerging industrial system, strengthening regional exchanges and developing new business.
Central cities, whose economic structures reflect and affect regional economic structures due to their concentrated production, fine division of labor and relatively complete industries and sectors, started playing a leading and driving role in regional economic development, according to Wang Yeqiang, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Chinese cities should seek different development modes and work together to realize regional economic integration, stressed Cong. (Edited by Gu Shanshan)
