German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier says he wants to change EU law in response to the European Commission's decision to block the planned railway merger between German industrial giant Siemens and its French competitor Alstom.
Together with France, Germany will prepare an initiative "that will lead to a timely adjustment of European competition law," Altmaier said on Wednesday in Berlin.
In global competition, it is important that Europe can build industry giants. He finds the decision by the Brussels competition authorities regrettable.
"[The decision] will spur us on and encourage us to continue to work for such a solution," Altmaier said.
