BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Railway (CR) will team up with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in the research of smart railway system with improved levels of safety, punctuality and comfort, according to an announcement made by PolyU recently.
In cooperation with influential rail transit system providers such as Hong Kong's MTR Corporation and Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), the two sides will create an advanced railway system using new techniques to predict the wear evolution of wheel and rail, and identify rail cracks and wheel damages, said Ni Yiqing, director of the National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Center (Hong Kong Branch) of PolyU.
The four-year project will benefit from the Research Impact Fund launched by the University Grants Committee (UGC), an advisory committee under the HKSAR government. The fund has recently allocated about 65 million HK dollars to 10 research projects of PolyU, including this project.
This cooperation is expected to contribute to the development of railway traffic both in the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong, with PolyU's experience in the R&D of railway study for over 20 years, according to Wei Bingjiang, vice president of PolyU. (Edited by Li Wenxin, liwenxin@xinhua.org)
