Germany, with its strong automobile industry, should occupy a leading position in autonomous driving, according to the country’s economy minister, Peter Altmaier. "We have all the know-how about how to design a car, how to solve technical problems," said the Christian Democrat politician at the DLD innovation conference in Munich on Monday. This must now be combined with data and artificial intelligence. "My ambition is to see Germany at the forefront.”
Altmaier said he was convinced that digitalization and artificial intelligence were probably the greatest challenges since the invention of the steam engine, which once heralded the industrial age. This new transformation doesn’t just affect individual industries, but the entire economy and all aspects of cultural and social life. Europe, with all its moral, ethical and political experience from the past centuries, could play an important role in this.
Going into detail, Altmaier said he wants to improve, among other things, the conditions for start-ups in Germany. Germany itself was also a kind of start-up in 1990 when the country was reunited, he said.
