Facebook plans to support ethical research into artificial intelligence in Munich with 7.5 million dollars. The money will go to the new independent Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence in partnership with the Technical University of Munich over a period of five years, Facebook announced.
The institute intends to investigate various aspects of artificial intelligence such as fairness, transparency and security, according to comments made on the fringes of the DLD innovation conference in Munich. The results are to be made available to society, business and legislators. While the initial financing comes from Facebook, the institute also wants to seek funding from other partners. The institute is headed by Professor Christoph Lütge of the TU Munich.
The spread of learning machines and artificial intelligence is increasingly raising ethical questions. These include, for example, the extent to which the prejudices of developers are incorporated into algorithms and reinforced by them. In the meantime, cases have emerged in which, for example, software for financial services or for selecting job applicants discriminated against particular social or ethnic groups.
