European countries must above all invest in education in order to master technological change, according to Diego Piacentini, the Italian government's former digitalization commissioner. The most important task of governments must be to make life of people and companies simpler. This is a special challenge in Italy, Piacentini, a former Amazon manager, said Sunday at the innovation conference DLD in Munich.
He said Germany was by no means more digitalized than Italy. "But in Germany the analogous part works," he added. The backlog demand in the state administration was a huge one, where by the issue was not just about technological developments, but rather about changing the culture of the administration. The focus must be put on the citizen, as the customer. To this end, in Italy an app is being developed in which a person can manage all his dealings with state authorities.
The technological change ahead will be a task taking up the next 10 to 20 years, Piacentini admitted. But overall, Europe should be thinking ahead instead of copying the United States. "Let's not build a Google of Europe or a Google of Gemany, but rather, let's invent the future," Piacentini urged.
