According to a new study, company founders with a social or ecological focus are more innovative than other founders. The survey, conducted by the KfW development bank, showed that almost one third of entrepreneurs offer market innovations in their field. One in four of the approximately 154,000 social entrepreneurs developed their own technological innovations to market maturity. According to the figures, only one in eight of other new entrepreneurs are active when it comes to market innovations (12 percent), while one in nine develop their own technological innovations (11 percent). The survey, which was taken in 2017, looked at companies that had been founded within the previous five years and were still active.
As part of its start-up monitor, the state-owned development bank for the first time examined the special features of new social enterprises. In 2017, according to the survey, there were 154,000 such company founders, running 108,000 businesses with a social and ecological focus. This made up around 9 percent of the total number of still active start-ups that had been founded in the five years prior to the survey.
