The ongoing boom in online retail trade in Germany has triggered a storm of applicants for training in a new labour skill, that of electronic commerce merchant. About 1,400 traineeship contracts had been signed with trainees in the new field for the current 2018-2019 training year, the German Retail Association HDE reported in Berlin. This clearly surpassed all expectations.
Altogether, the German retail sector employees around 150,000 trainees in various skills. The new traineeship is focussed on the technology and content needed for operating an online-shop.
In view of the strong economy, the HDE is projecting retail trade turnover for 2018 in Germany to reach 525 billion euros (595 billion dollars), a rise of 2.3 per cent from last year. The growth in online trade has been particularly robust, rising 9.6 per cent.
