China unveils guide for express industry to advocate green packaging

December 17, 2018

Abstract : The State Post Bureau (SPB) has recently unveiled a guide for the express industry to advocate green packaging in the industry and promote recycling of the packages.

BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The State Post Bureau (SPB) has recently unveiled a guide for the express industry to advocate green packaging in the industry and promote recycling of the packages.

According to the guide, the express enterprises should use environmentally friendly packaging materials, gradually select low-weight and high-strength packaging materials under the premise of not affecting the safety of express delivery, and develop the recycling packaging information system and use the recycling devices.

Meanwhile, the enterprises should gradually increase the proportion of plastic packaging bags that meet the standards of the biodegradable plastics, proactively provide users with green packaging options, and establish incentives to drive applications of the green packaging.

Enterprises are encouraged to use the new express containers such as revolving express boxes and shared express boxes, to gradually reduce the amount of the packages used for express delivery.

In addition, enterprises should provide express delivery packaging recycling containers with clear marks in distribution centers and business outlets, and establish corresponding working mechanisms and business processes to promote the recycling and reuse of packaging materials.

According to preliminary statistics, up to now, major express delivery companies in China have reduced the number of packaged products by 5.5 billion per year, through measures such as reducing over-packaging and recycling of cartons. The electronic voucher penetration rate has increased to 92 percent, which helps save at least 31.4 billion traditional paper vouchers annually. (Edited by Hu Pingchao, hupingchao@xinhua.org)
