The expansion of renewable energies is making progress: According to a new study, for the first time they have a higher electricity capacity than conventional power plants in Germany. In 2017, renewables had a capacity of 112.5 gigawatts, more than coal-fired power plants, nuclear power plants and other facilities, which amounted to 105.1 gigawatts. This is the conclusion of the joint monitoring report of the Federal Cartel Office and the Federal Network Agency published in Bonn on Wednesday. In 2016, the gigawatt ratio was 104.5 (renewable) to 107.5 (conventional).
Since the full capacity of wind or solar power plants is rarely produced due to the weather, coal-fired, gas-fired or nuclear power plants are still well ahead in actual electricity generation: Of the 601.4 terawatt hours in total, only about one third comes from renewable energy sources (204.8 TWh; conventional: 396.6 TWh).
