BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The association for promotion of the bio-pharmaceutical industry in Guandong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was inaugurated in south China's Guangzhou city on Thursday.
The association will gather resources of the government, enterprises, universities, research institutions, clinical research and capital, and make full use of the upstream and downstream industries and innovative resources of the bio-industry chain in the Greater Bay Area to achieve rapid development of the biomedical and health industries.
Representatives of the government, scientific research and business circles of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao witnessed the inauguration, believing that Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao have a solid foundation for cooperation and broad prospects in the field of biomedicine.
Hong Kong and Macao have significant advantages in basic biomedical research and international talent pool, while Guangzhou has a relatively sufficient clinical research platform and industrial chain foundation, said Chen Haijia, president of Guangdong SALIAI Stem Cell Research Institute.
Since 2017, industry giants such as GE, BeiGene (06160.HK) and Thermo Fisher Scientific have settled in the Guangzhou Development District.
It is estimated that by 2021, the scale of Guangzhou's bio-pharmaceutical industry will reach 500 billion yuan, accounting for more than 4 percent of the city's GDP. (Edited by Hu Pingchao, hupingchao@xinhua.org)
