The pharmaceutical and chemical group Merck is planning an innovation center in the Chinese special economic zone of Guangzhou. The "Innovation Hub" near Hong Kong is to open in September 2019 and will pave the way for new ideas in this strategically important market, the DAX-listed group announced in Darmstadt on Monday. "We are now creating a strong platform for Merck and our partners to drive innovation in southern China," said Kai Beckmann, head of Merck’s Performance Materials division.
Merck wants to use the 700 square-meter center to help strengthen ties with technology companies, start-ups, universities and research institutes. In addition, start-ups will be given the opportunity to test their projects in an accelerator program in China before they further develop them in Darmstadt.
Merck has recently focused more closely on China. For example, the company is cooperating with Alibaba Health, a subsidiary of the Chinese online retailer, to offer digital pharmaceutical solutions.
In the summer, Merck also opened a technology center in Shanghai for the organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) that are installed in screens.
