Workers in the German state of Thuringia's craft industry will be trained from January 2019 in assisting their companies with the adoption and implementation of digital strategies.
The state is providing 160,000 euros for the project, its Economy Ministry announced on Wednesday. The Chamber of Skilled Crafts in south Thuringia estimates the total cost for the initiative, known as "DigitalCoach," at nearly 185,000 euros through March 2020.
A first phase will see employees from eight to 10 craft businesses analyse ongoing digitalisation activities in their companies, recommend further actions and accompany their implementation.
This could for instance include measures in areas such as construction documentation, accounting, internal and customer communication, the manufacturing process or warehousing.
The Thuringian craft industry, with its 30,000 firms and 148,000 employees, could significantly profit from the digitalisation of all areas of life, the Economy Ministry said.
It argued that issues such as achieving more efficiency in processes, procedures and services, more cooperation, and closer customer ties make digitalisation interesting and important for craft businesses.
