Digitalisation, ever more interconnectedness - the car industry is grappling with a massive change. German manufacturer Volkswagen announced new plans on Tuesday in Berlin to prepare its flagship VW Passenger Cars brand for the future.
It wants to start using special client IDs to give car buyers access to digital services such as car sharing. Their cars could be provided with updates or upgrades via mobile communications - without having to be brought to the garage. And a new internet platform would allow for the purchase of cars online.
Volkswagen plans to launch the new model in Europe in April 2020.
It has negotiated new dealer contracts so that it can establish direct contact with its clients in the future. So far, this right had been reserved for the dealers. VW says it has more than 3,000 dealers and service partners in Europe, employing some 54,000 workers.
