BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- As one of the key areas for Belt and Road construction, energy cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative has achieved tangible achievements that were in line with interests of all countries invovled and boast broad prospects, according to Lian Weiliang, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission.
Speaking at the 1st Belt and Road Energy Ministerial Conference during the 3rd International Forum on Energy Transition held in Suzhou city of east China’s Jiangsu province, Lian proposed to establish a Belt and Road partnership to build a closer relationship in terms of energy cooperation.
It is noted that China has newly established some 70 bilateral and multilateral energy cooperation mechanisms with Belt and Road countries over the past five years. More than 100 energy cooperation documents have been signed.
Moreover, China has carried out energy cooperation planning with more than 10 countries and regions along the Belt and Road routes, and three major energy cooperation centers including China-Arab, China-African Union and China-Central and Eastern Europe energy cooperation centers are currently under construction.
Focusing on major energy projects and capacity cooperation, China has cooperated with relevant countries to build a large number of cross-border energy infrastructures, improving the level of energy infrastructure in various countries, while enhancing the ability of regional resource optimization and energy cooperation security.
GCL Group is working with Poly Group to build East Africa oil and gas economic belt based on existing Ethiopia-Djibouti oil and gas project, according to Zhu Gongshan, board Chairman with GCL Group, a diversified energy conglomerate in China that specializes in new and clean energy, holding assets across China, Africa, Middle East, North America, Southeast Asia and Europe.
The Ethiopia - Djibouti oil and gas project is the largest Belt and Road energy project in Africa that boasts initial proven reserves of 5 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.
At present, the project has some gas wells completed and is accelerating the construction of oil and gas pipelines and LNG project with an annual output of 3 million tonnes. In June this year, the project successfully produced the first barrel of crude oil in Ethiopia's history. (Edited by Niu Huizhe, niuhuizhe@xinhua.org)
