BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- East China's Fujian Province, as a core area in the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, has seen improving ability in serving the Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative.
The annual average investment in Fujian’s port infrastructure construction has exceeded 10 billion yuan over the past five years, with a group of professional and modern large berths and deep water channels accomplished.
As of the end of June in 2018, Fujian Province had constructed 8 deep water channels. The actual cargo carrying capacity of these channels had reached nearly 700 million metric tons (tonnes), among which the actual carrying capacity of containers had exceeded 18 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU).
Meanwhile, the collection and distribution capacities of these ports have been effectively improved. The province has opened 130 container foreign trade routes and established friendly relations with 14 key ports around the world.
Fujian Province also encourages foreign investments in port construction. Currently, 33 berths invested by foreign companies have been built and put into operation, while 20 piers has been under construction or planning. (Edited by Gu Shanshan, Zhang Yuan, zhangyuan11@xinhua.org)
