Volkswagen wants to rapidly push ahead its transformation into an e-car manufacturer. By 2022, 27 models from four of the group’s brands will be launched on the basis of its own the specially created e-car platform, said Thomas Ulbrich, member of the board of management responsible for e-mobility, in an internal interview that dpa has seen. The platform, known as MEB, is a modular car platform for electric cars that VW presented in Dresden. In the first wave, around 10 million of the company’s vehicles will be based on the MEB, Ulbrich said.
The first fully electric model from Volkswagen's I.D. family will roll off the assembly line in Zwickau at the end of 2019. Last year, the company announced that more than 34 billion euros would be invested in the development of e-cars, autonomous driving, new mobility services and digitization by 2022. By 2025, according to previously released information, the VW Group’s brands will launch a total of more than 80 new e-car models on the market. The entire range of models is due to be electric by 2030.
The company is investing 1.2 billion euros to turn its Zwickau plant into the first purely electric car plant. Up to half a million battery systems per year are to come from its plant in Braunschweig. A pilot line for battery cell production is being built in Salzgitter. A prototype of the so-called Volks-Wallbox - a home charger for electric cars - will also be on display for the first time in Dresden. It will ensure that the battery is 80 percent charged within 30 minutes.
