BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's environmental protection industry reported a 18 percent year on year increase in sales revenues in the first half of this year, after growing at a two-digit rate for years, according to the China Association of Environmental Protection Industry.

Statistics provided by the association show that the industry developed rapidly, with annual growth rate averaged at 26.9 percent in the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).

Its sales reached 1.15 trillion yuan worth in 2016 and 1.35 trillion yuan in 2017, up 19.8 percent and 17.4 percent on year respectively.

China's environmental protection industry has outpaced its national economy and general industry. It also saw constant progress in technology and initially-established marketized mechanism.

However, according to Wang Jian, deputy director of the department of planning and finance with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the industry still faces some problems and challenges, including inadequate market demands, over dependence on capital input, vicious competition and difficulty in financing.

Based on these, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has released guidelines to solve the problems and help promote the development of the industry.

Cui Shuhong, director of the environmental impact assessment department with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, noted that the guidelines will further help release market demands. The ministry is now building a comprehensive service platform to enhance standard guidance and promote the transfer of science and technology achievements.

"We will enhance regulation on the industry by formulating technical standards, technical guidelines on bids and so on", said Cui. (Edited by Jiang Feifan, Zhang Yuan, jianfiefan@xinhua.org)
