China Harbour builds new terminal south of Egypt's Suez Canal -- China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) started on Aug. 28 the main phase of the construction of a new terminal basin in Sokhna Port south of the Suez Canal northeast of Egypt. The project was assigned to CHEC by the Sokhna branch of the Emirati corporation DP World, the main investor and container operator in the port located at the Gulf of Suez. At a launching ceremony, CHEC said it will deliver the "Basin 2" project in fewer than 12 months ahead of the deadline.Sokhna Port is located within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), a main economic region in Egypt whose development is one of the country's mega projects to attract foreign investments for further economic growth.

Oman to open new terminal for Duqm Airport soon to boost economic zone -- The Omani authorities said a new passenger terminal will be opened for Duqm Airport on Sept. 17 in a move to boost the Duqm Free Zone. The airport, which is in line with the latest international standards, is expected to be a value added to other economic projects in the economic zone, Futaisi noted. Oman is seeing expanding foreign investment in the Gulf state, especially in the Duqm Free Zone, where Chinese investment alone is expected to hit 10.7 billion U.S. dollars by 2022. Moreover, an oil refinery with a production capacity of about 230,000 barrels per day will be established as part of the project of Omani-Chinese industrial city in the free zone.

First Chinese-financed Chilean wind farm starts operation -- Punta Sierra wind farm, the first Chinese-financed wind farm in Chile, started to generate electricity on Aug. 24. The project, located in Ovalle in northern Chile, is invested by China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) and involves an investment of about 150 million U.S. dollars. It has an installed capacity of 82 MW and generates about 282 GWh every year. The wind farm will supply energy equivalent to 130,000 homes per year and has 32 wind turbines of 2.5 MW produced by Xinjiang Goldwind Science Technology Co., Ltd (002202.SZ).

China Tower invests in communication infrastructure in Laos-- The Chinese state-owned China Tower, together with the Lao government and local firm Click Lao Marketing and Consultancy, signed an agreement in the Lao capital to jointly establish Southeast Asia Tower company. The Southeast Asia Tower Company will mainly be engaged in the construction, maintenance and operation of communication towers, base stations, power supplies and other supporting facilities, as well as that of indoor distribution systems and transmission systems in Laos. According to the agreement inked on Tuesday evening, the shareholding ratio of the three parties is 70 percent, 15 percent, and 15 percent respectively.

In Chile, China-funded wind farm boosts clean energy -- On Chile's windswept coast, a newly inaugurated China-funded wind farm, the first of its kind, is expected to supply clean energy equivalent to 130,000 homes per year.The Punta Sierra wind farm is "diversifying the grid and making it much cleaner and sustainable," Energy Minister Susana Jimenez said at the opening ceremony last week joined by China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) and Chilean government officials. With its 32 turbines, the wind farm in the country's north-central Coquimbo region is capable of generating 282 GWh a year, helping cut carbon dioxide by at least dozens of thousands of tons.

China's BUCG completes paving of new runway at Maldives Velana Int'l Airport -- The paving construction of a new runway in Maldives Velana International Airport undertaken by Beijing Urban Construction Group Co.(BUCG) was completed on Aug. 24. According to the project leader from BUCG, the new runway, with a length of 3,400 meters and a width of 60 meters, will be equipped with lighting and navigation systems after the completion. The project, which kicked off in November 2016 and is to be completed in November 2019, is an important cooperation project between China and Maldives under the framework of "Belt and Road".

Sinohydro signs EPC contract for Thai potash mine ground facility project -- The consortium of Sinohydro Corp. Ltd under PowerChina and Thai listed company TRC signed the EPC contract for a potash mine ground facility construction project with Thai company Asean Potash Chaiyaphum Public Company (APOT) on August 23 in Bangkok. According to PowerChina, the APOT potash mine project is located Chaiyaphum province, Thailand. The overground part the consortium to construct includes 26 kilometers of raw water pipelines, a potash fertilizer processing plants and supporting facilities, 7.5 kilometers of waste conveyor belts, waste water pipelines, waste processing plants and waste water pools. The consortium received the bid-winning notice from the owner on April 20, 2018.

Chinese firm starts road project in New Hanover Island of Papua New Guinea -- The commencement ceremony of the road reconstruction project on New Hanover Island of Papua New Guinea undertaken by China 19th Metallurgical Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC), was held in Hungat village on August 22, according to MCC's website. With a total length of 50 kilometers, the project mainly involves re-paving, widening the pavement and related drainage works in a period of 12 months.

Chinese firm spurs construction of power transmission line in Brazil -- Brazil's second ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission line is going to be completed ahead of schedule. Once constructed, the 2,518-kilometer line will transmit energy from the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant in northern Para state to Brazil's second-largest city and leading tourism destination Rio de Janeiro. China's Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation 1 (SEPCO1) is working to deliver its two tracts -- one in southeast Minas Gerais state and the other in northeast Tocantins state -- by February 2019, some three months before the contract deadline.
