BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The paving construction of a new runway in Maldives Velana International Airport undertaken by Beijing Urban Construction Group Co.(BUCG) was completed on Friday.
According to the project leader from BUCG, the new runway, with a length of 3,400 meters and a width of 60 meters, will be equipped with lighting and navigation systems after the completion.
The project, which kicked off in November 2016 and is to be completed in November 2019, is an important cooperation project between China and Maldives under the framework of "Belt and Road".
The expanded Velana International Airport can effectively improve its transport capacity. At the same time, the construction project will bring about 9,000 jobs and create about 75,000 new jobs in tourism-related industries, said Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Economic Development of Maldives.
