German carmaking giant Volkswagen plans to increase production at its main manufacturing plant at Wolfsburg, in the country's north, to 1 million vehicles, the company announced last week.
The production increase would be bundled with the introduction of the latest generation, the eighth, of VW's evergreen earner, the Golf, Andreas Tostmann, head of production and logistics for the core VW brand, said.
Golf production in the east German city of Zwickau and Puebla in Mexico would be shifted to Wolfsburg, he said.
Zwickau would switch to producing the all-electric ID family of vehicles, Tostmann said.
By 2020, Tostmann said he expected productivity at all the German production plants to increase by 25 per cent.
