The first wind turbines in the North Sea are to be erected in 2019 using a new process that will generate less noise during the construction phase.
Canadian energy group Northland Power is building the Deutsche Bucht ("DeBu") Offshore Wind Farm 95 kilometers north-west of the German island of Borkum. The farm will be equipped with 31 turbines including two additional so-called "suction buckets", the company said.
These structures do not need to be planted into the seabed by ramming. The foundations of the turbines plant themselves up as deep as 18 meters into the seabed using the force of their own weight and negative pressure.
This innovation in the construction process minimizes the noise stress experienced by porpoises, seals, fish and other marine life.
