China to have sewage treatment in all counties, towns by 2020

February 03, 2017

Abstract : China will have sewage treatment in all counties and major towns by the end of 2020, according to the nation's construction plan for sewage and recycling in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- China will have sewage treatment in all counties and major towns by the end of 2020, according to the nation's construction plan for sewage and recycling in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

The goal for urban sewage treatment is 95 percent. The plan said that the nation would complete the construction of 125,900 kilometers of sewage pipelines and the rebuilding of 27,700 kilometers of old sewage pipelines, with an extra sewage disposal capacity of 50.22 million cubic meters per day from 2016 to 2020.

China has completed its annual target for urban underground pipeline construction to increase urbanization and reduce accidents caused by aged facilities.

"By Dec. 20, 2016, China had completed the construction of 2,005 km urban underground pipelines in 147 cities, surpassing its annual target of 2,000 km," the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said.

The massive underground pipelines play a major role in urban development, carrying water, sewage, gas, electricity, telecommunications, cable signals and other necessary supplies.

China completed its general survey of underground pipelines by the end of 2015 and plans to upgrade its underground pipelines by 2019.
