BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Since the implementation of returning grazing land to grassland project in 2003, by 2018, China's central government has invested a total of 29.57 billion yuan, accumulatively increasing the production of 830 million metric tons (tonnes) of fresh grass, National Forestry and Grassland Administration showed.
In 2017, the total output of fresh grass in the natural grassland of China was 1.065 billion metric tons (tonnes), an increase of 2.53 percent over the previous year. The grassland comprehensive vegetation coverage reached 55.3 percent, 4.3 percentage points higher over 2011.
Liu Jiawen, a senior official with National Forestry and Grassland Administration, said that although the current grassland ecology in China has improved significantly, the contradiction between grassland ecological protection and pastoral economic development is still very prominent. It is still very common for illegal grassland occupation and livestock overcrowding. Problems such as grassland degradation, desertification and rocky desertification still exist.
