BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- China’s 156 national high-tech zones achieved a total operating revenue of 12.35 trillion yuan in the first five months this year, up 8.13 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
These high-tech zones net 726.5 billion yuan of profits during the period, up 8.78 percent year on year. Newly registered enterprises amounted to 136,000, up 25.3 percent on year.
The country’s national high-tech zones have seen the emerging of new technologies, new industries, new models, and new businesses in recent years, with the number of gazelle enterprises rising to current 2,576 from 1,542 in 2014. The number of unicorn enterprises rose from 104 in 2016 to 125 currently, accounting for 76.2 percent of the country’s total, according to Zhang Zhihong, director with Torch High Technology Industry Development Center with the MOST.
