BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- East China's Shanghai will actively promote construction of the cruise industry, accelerate the development of cruise tourism, and strive to build a world-class cruise center with global competitiveness, according to a recent joint conference about the cruise tourism development.

Shanghai will in particular promote development of the cruise manufacturing in Pudong district and advance construction of a demonstration base for international cruise service trade.

It will comprehensively improve the management and service level of cruise ports, such as the promotion of the pilot cruise ship tickets.

Meanwhile, Shanghai will take advantage of the construction of the Maritime Silk Road to speed up further extension of the Shanghai cruise routes to the north and south so as to enrich the cruise tourism products.

According to the joint meeting, in 2017, Shanghai cruise port received a total of 512 cruise ships, accounting for 43.3 percent of the country’s total, and saw the passenger throughput near 3 million person-times, accounting for 60 percent of the country's total.

Preliminary statistics show that as of the end of June 2018, Shanghai Port received 177 international cruise ships and saw the passenger throughput via cruise ships reach about 1.1 million person-times. (Edited by Hu Pingchao, hupingchao@xinhua.org)
