Gardens in Germany
Germany is the least well-known of the great European gardening countries but has a rich heritage of designed gardens, particularly from the baroque, rococo and romantic periods.
They are well maintained but because so many German gardens are now public parks (with no entrance fees) they are not as generously resourced as, for example, the chateau gardens of France.
Grugapark Essen
The Grugapark developed from the Ruhr horticulture exhibition of 1929 and was re-designed for the Essen Bundesgartenschau of 1965. It has plant displays and theme gardens.
Schloss Benrath, Duesseldorf
A Rococo palace with part of a baroque garden and a nineteenth century garden designed by Peter Joseph Lenne. The park and garden were restored for EUROGA 2002, including the park, the kitchen garden and the palace garden behind the Orangery.
