GUANGZHOU, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China's economic powerhouse Guangdong Province imported goods worth 1.1 trillion yuan (169.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the first five months this year, up 14.8 percent on the same period last year, according to local customs Friday.
As China's largest trading province, Guangdong's trade volume reached 2.67 trillion yuan during the same period, up 3.7 percent year on year. Yet its exports dropped by 2.8 percent to 1.57 trillion yuan in the first five months, according to the provincial customs authority.
The imports of mechanical and electrical products in the southern province reached 746 billion yuan in the first five months, up 20.5 percent year on year, while its exports of labor-intensive products dropped by 18.6 percent to 268.66 billion yuan during the same period.
Guangdong customs predicts steady growth of its imports and exports in the second quarter.
