Big data technologies bring smart solutions to fight against epidemic

March 25, 2020

Abstract : By sorting out the life track and contact history of the infected people, big data technologies can successfully identify infection sources and close contacts and provide valuable information on epidemic prevention and control.

BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua)--Chinese cities are utilizing big data technologies amid the fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia.

The smart technologies can be used to identify infection sources and close contacts, help analyze when the epidemic spread will reach a peak, whether there are secondary infections, and facilitate the control of personnel flow.

Beijing Jiankangbao, a mini online program launched in Beijing, uses big data to analyze the health status of people.

For example, the mini program is used to solve the health check problem of commuters who come from neighboring regions to enter Beijing.

For those who meet the commute comparison rules, green status will show on the mini program. For those whose health information is not reported to Beijing's relevant departments, a window that says "Your information is temporarily unavailable in the system" will pop up on the mini program.

Since its launch on March 1, Beijing Jiankangbao has seen over 5.5 million users with the number of health status inquiries exceeding 14 million.

Similarly, Xuhui District of Shanghai has launched a big data-based smart system to prevent and control epidemic in local communities.

The resident information registration and home observation service functions in the system have provided great help on monitoring returnees from high-risk areas.

When entering community, residents must scan a QR code to register personal information such as name, ID number, and Shanghai address in the system, and will only be allowed by the security staff to enter if their information report is completed.

If people who are still in quarantine try to enter or exit the community, the backstage automatic alarm in the system will be immediately triggered to inform relevant staff of the neighborhood committee to stop the unauthorized outing.

The system with smart big data technologies also can provide convenient life services for people staying at home.

For instance, if vegetable and daily necessities are needed and the demands are reported on the system, the neighborhood committee and property management staff will deliver the items to households.

Moreover, the "Smart Call-out Robot" function in the system will actively call three times a day to inquire about the body temperature and health status of residents in quarantine, reducing the workload of community workers.

An algorithm combining electricity big data and transformer area grids is applied in northwest China's Shaanxi province to collect and analyze daily electricity consumption data of residents, and move further to assist the epidemic prevention and control work of communities.

China highly values the protection of private data. Personal information collected for the purpose of epidemic prevention and control and disease treatment shall not be used for other purposes, according to a circular on protecting personal data and using big data for supporting battle against epidemic recently released by the Office of Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission.
