Munich is to host the 2021 International Motor Show (IAA), Germany's automobile association VDA announced in Berlin on Tuesday.
Berlin and Hamburg were the other cities in the running to take over the event, which takes place every two years. Frankfurt had hosted the IAA for almost 70 years.
"It was a very close race, and I thank all of those involved warmly," said VDA head Hildegard Mueller.
The VDA indicated it had chosen Munich because the city had made available a number of venues close to the city centre.
"As a major technology and industrial location which is home to numerous high-tech companies, start-ups, and research institutions, as well as innovative carmakers, Munich is an excellent partner for the IAA's new direction," it said.
In 2021 the VDA aims to reach a wider public by not confining the event to a trade fair hall.
The VDA decided to move away from Frankfurt after visitor numbers fell and in response to growing criticism from exhibitors.
Munich-based carmaker BMW has announced it will remove its own symbol from the four-tower high rise at the Olympiapark for the duration of the event, replacing it with the IAA logo.
