The Danish energy supplier Ørsted has found a first customer for its planned wind farm, Borkum Riffgrund 3, off the coast of the German state of Lower Saxony.
The chemical company Covestro from Leverkusen will purchase 100 megawatts of the green electricity produced over a period of 10 years at a previously agreed price, Ørsted announced in Hamburg on Wednesday. This is a first step to secure stable revenues for a part of the power generation from Borkum Riffgrund 3, said Ørsted’s offshore boss, Martin Neubert.
The company wants to build the first offshore wind farm 53 kilometres off the island of Borkum without any subsidies. The project has emerged from three smaller precursor wind farms and now has a capacity of 900 megawatts. The contracts from the tenders were awarded in 2017 and 2018. However, a final decision on the investment has not yet been made. If the wind farm is built, it should be fully operational by 2025.
