Hamburg has already exceeded its self-imposed target of 1,000 publicly accessible charging stations for electric vehicles this year. Currently, 965 charging points are in operation via Stromnetz Hamburg GmbH alone, the city's municipal electricity authority informed dpa. In addition, there were around 60 offers from private charging infrastructure operators such as NewMotion or Allego. As a result more than 1,000 publicly accessible charging stations are available in Hamburg, making the city a pioneer in Germany, according to its own data.

Of the charging stations, 64 are currently so-called fast chargers, which according to the authority represents the highest density in Europe. That number is set to rise to at least 70, as others are planned by third parties, the authority announced. It added that 3,871 purely electric vehicles were registered in Hamburg at the beginning of October, as were 2,060 plug-in hybrid vehicles and 39 hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Over the next five years, the authority in Hamburg expects an increase to more than 50,000 all-electric and hybrid vehicles.
