Italian blood orange comes to Asia

November 08, 2019

Abstract : The harvest of blood oranges grown in Sicily. As the new citrus fruit season is coming, global events are getting underway, which will offer great opportunities to meet international customers, especially those operating on the Chinese markets who can help to increase exports to Asia.

The harvest of blood oranges grown in Sicily, the largest island in Italy, will begin in December this year. As the new citrus fruit season is coming, global events are getting underway, which will offer great opportunities to meet international customers, especially those operating on the Chinese markets who can help to increase exports to Asia.

The 23rd International Exhibition for the Food, Drink, Hotel, Restaurant, Food service, Bakery & Retail Industries (FHC China), to be held in November 12, will attract over 120,000 exhibitors looking for new things or products on the market which will become an important event for specialists from all over the world in food and beverage areas to meet.

The FHC will provide an opportunity to introduce the blood orange collection produced in Italy by Oranfrizer to China's market. Oranfrizer, a pioneer company in this area, has successfully delivered three containers of Italian blood oranges weighing about 60 tonnes by sea to China, which has been sold out in few days.

This year, Oranfrizer will provide more diversified products to the Chinese market and start to export at the beginning of the citrus fruit season.

Tarocco Ippolito, Tarocco Sciara, Tarocco Meli and Tarocco Sant'Alfio, the four famous varieties of Italian citrus fruit sector, are going to be presented in Asia. During the FHC, exhibitors will learn more about the different types of blood oranges, which ripen on the plain of Mount Etna one after the other, from December to May, discovering their own characteristics.

The harvested fruits by Oranfrizer are the natural heritage in Sicily with its own manufacturing techniques for over 50 years. Thanks to the innovation and commercial evolution underway, Oranfrizer will continue to explore more markets beyond Europe.

The FHC China is a new step for Oranfrizer to enter Asia markets and on this occasion, it will represent 'The European Art of Taste', an international project of CSO (Centro Servizi Ortofrutticoli), which aims to promote the performance and awareness of Italian unique fruits in Asia markets.

Oranfrizer is now making investments in citrus orchards in Sicily and has certified about 25 hectares more than last season, which aims to increase its export to China. As for the next season, the harvest and distribution will span from December to May, a long period which will be appreciated by importers. In 2018 and 2019, later blood oranges could still be found on Italian and overseas markets up until the first week of June.

"The main market for us to satisfy will always be the Italian market which is the most important market we serve," said Nello Alba, Oranfrizer CEO, "In the first six months of 2019, we stepped into one of the most important and difficult markets to reach, the market of China. We carefully selected and shipped 60 tonnes of blood oranges from Italy that were distributed to Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo and Guangzhou. Because of the excellent results this year, we've made more investments in Sicily to increase the output. We've adapted and increased our production capacity to cover the demands in our new markets. In 2020, about 500 tonnes of blood oranges more than last year will be available".
